A corpus-based study of 4-grams in the research article genre

The analysis of phraseology in the specialized discourse science has sparked researchers’ interest last few decades, probably because use word groupings specific registers can provide information about certain typical features genre. For instance, Gledhill (2009) explores colligations tenses scientific articles and discovers that present tense is used for qualitative empirical expressions, while past provides quantitative research-oriented descriptions; Pérez-Llantada (2014) investigates 4-word lexical bundles research articles, finding these multiword combinations express referential meaning organize text; finally, Jiménez-Navarro (2019) analyzes adjective + noun collocations a corpus papers concludes phraseological units convey meanings when this genre, since they represent contents articles. aim current study to contribute 4-grams language science. To end, two objectives are defined: first, ascertain structure 4-grams; second, analyze function perform. methodology was based on entailed five major steps: (1) built, (2) list automatically extracted using software Sketch Engine, (3) resulting manually verified order suppress inaccurate candidates, (4) selected were classified depending their structural framework, (5) categorized according text. findings show that, terms first objective, most phrases; as second sequences examined mostly concerned conducted authorship texts.
